Our recently published children's book - "Zip,
Burp, and Hula" is about a Chameleon that discovers
how to be himself. When he first comes out of his shell Chameleon
doesn't know what to do. He looks to God for direction and then
suddenly a dragonfly comes to help. After the zippy dragonfly
comes a burping bullfrog to assist Chameleon in changing colors
and discovering who he truly is. Then things become crazy and
fun through a series of mishaps where Chameleon becomes covered
with spots and stripes. Just when Chameleon is about to give
up on changing colors a wise moth arrives. She suggests that
his friends do the hula to help Chameleon to change colors. Though
it seemed like a very strange way for Chameleon to go about changing
colors it worked. Chameleon forgot about himself and changed
colors without even knowing he did. That is when Chameleon realizes
that God really does care about him, and had lovingly sent all
his friends to help him. (What a great story to teach our children!)
Author Cindy Johnston lives in Kentucky with her husband and daughter. Cindy has been writing and drawing since she was young, winning awards for her artwork and writing. She now has an internet business where she has sold her whimsical watercolor paintings of Scottish Terriers. Mrs. Johnston has also written several children’s books. In 2000 at the Heartland Writer’s Conference both of Mrs. Johnston’s entries were selected as one of the four finalist and "Zip, Burp, and Hula" went on to win second place.
Johnson states, "There are two things I hope that children (and adults) take to heart after reading this story. First I want them to see God’s love. Another thing I wanted to do is help children understand is that it is sometimes hard to be yourself. This happens to be a personal struggle of mine. Even now I can find myself being so preoccupied with pleasing others that I miss the fun of just being who God created me to be. I hope this story helps children to relax a bit about themselves and to just enjoy who they truly are.
